Mitra is of Bengali origin. Her father is Ranjit Mallick, a business man and a Chartered Accountant and her mother is a teacher & interior designer. Mitra also has a younger sister.

Koena Mitra attended South Point High School in Calcutta. She went to college at Lady Brabourne College in Calcutta. Mitra was trained with the Mamata Shankar ballet troupe for 12 years. She was a super model and has walked the ramp in places like Milan, Paris, New York etc.


She also played basketball, tennis and participated in swimming during her college days. She always wanted to be an athlete.
